本書是在2010年第二版教材的基礎上修訂而成。新版教材在沿用原有編寫理念的同時在文章選材、板塊設計、練習編排等方面進行了修訂。本書按主題分為8個單元，每單元包括1篇新聞，3篇文章，所選文章漸進地增加閱讀長度和難度，其后附上一定的閱讀理解和詞匯練習，以及適量的寫作練習，適合大中專院校中已完成英語初級階段學習的非英語專業(yè)學習者使用，所選閱讀文章均來自近年來原版英文報刊雜志，題材多樣。此外，為方便使用, 本書附有練習答案。
本書同樣適合大中專院校中水平較高的英語學習者和大學英語四六級、研究生入學考試及TOFEL、GRE等各類考生備考使用。
目的明確：文章編排及練習設計圍繞訓練學生主動索取信息的習慣和能力這一主要目的，而非包羅萬象。
方法獨特：用問答式（問題解決）閱讀方法，提高學生主動閱讀和準確理解語言的能力，訓練其快速獲取信息的能力。
信息量大： 8 個主題及其文章與生活和社會緊密結合，豐富學生科學、文化、經(jīng)濟等方面的背景知識，了解時事，擴大其知識面。
時代性強：文章選自近兩年原版英文報紙雜志，綜合考慮內(nèi)容的持久性和語言的典型性。
實踐性強：學生在進行大量閱讀后可進行寫作、討論和口頭報告等活動。
《英語報刊選讀教程》首版于2003 年，2010 年修訂出版
第二版。
報刊文章（包括紙媒與網(wǎng)絡）有其明顯的時效性，瞬息萬
變的世界形勢必然帶來思維及語言的變化，為保證語言學習者
的英語學習及知識結構與時俱進，故選編第三版。
第三版在課文編排及練習設計上仍保持前兩版的教學理念
與基本格局，但在以下幾方面做了修訂：
1. 文章內(nèi)容方面，更換了所有新聞文章及三分之二的課文，
以保持其時效性強的特點。
2. 單元設計方面，調(diào)整了主題順序， 第六單元的主題
Society 改為Global Development, 以期更好地反映世界發(fā)展的正
能量現(xiàn)象。
3. 板塊設計方面， 每篇文章的課后練習都增加了
From Reading to Writing/Speaking，增加基于輸入的輸出訓練，
以提高學生的語言應用能力，同時也為整體語言技能訓練提供
更多可能。本練習的設計理念為訓練學生真正的日常及學術交
際能力（口頭與書面），包括信息描述、摘要寫作、觀點陳述，
以 及有效提問等能力。
