This proceedings book is a collection of academic papers published in the 2017 International Symposium on Animal Environment and Welfare (ISAEW 2017), which is the fourth of a series ofbiennial academic events. The three previous symposia were the International Symposium on Health Environment and Animal Welfare (ISHEAW 2011), October 19-22, 2011; the ISAEW 2013, October 19-22, 2013; and the ISAEW 2015, October 23-26, 2015. All the symposia were held in Rongchang, Chongqing City, China.
The announcement ofthe ISAEW 2017 in October 2016 was responded by submissions of 93 symposium abstracts from Asia, Europe, North and South Americas, and Oceania. After screening and reviewing, 59 research and review papers were accepted and included in this book. These papers represent the latest research and development in animal environment and welfare, which were conducted and achieved by professionals, graduate students, and staff, who work or study in different countries. The papers were prepared by 227 authors (and co-authors) from research institutions in various areas, state academies and key laboratories, animal production companies, animal research and monitoring centers, and universities in 14 countries (i.e., Austria, Australia,Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Canada, China, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Viet Nam, and USA). We are pleased to see that the ISAEW is gaining more popularity internationally over the past years. Compared with the 2015 ISAEW Proceedings, we have witnessed this year with significant increases in numbers of submitted abstracts (by 50%), accepted papers (by 34%),authors (by 86%), and author affiliations (by 56%).
As the name ofthe symposium indicates, there are two major groups ofresearch areas covered in the proceedings: animal environment and animal welfare, which are risen from the development ofmodern animal production, and mostly featured with confined and concentrated animal feeding operations. Based on the specific topics of the accepted papers, a balanced structure of the book, and consistency with previous publications, the 59 papers are divided into six themes in the proceedings. Themes I to III are devoted to indoor and outdoor animal environment. Themes Ⅳ and V are centered on various aspects of animal welfare; and Theme Ⅵ touches both animal environment and animal welfare by discussing new systems, equipment, and techniques for production and research. However, as it can be easily noticed, the topics of many of the papers cover more than one theme; so the division ofthe themes in this publication does not mean a clear-cut classification ofthe papers.
Like the previous proceedings ofthe ISAEWs, this book will be a valuable information source for agricultural engineers, animal scientists, graduate students, and livestock and poultry producers. It can also be a current reference for environmentalists, agricultural and environmental policy makers, and animal production equipment manufacturers.
We are thankful to all the authors who shared their research progresses, findings, and experiences in this book. We are particularly grateful for the support from the International Research Center for Animal Environment and Welfare (IRCAEW), and the symposium co-chairs and the organizing committee. We would also like to convey our thanks to all the symposium abstract and paper reviewers, who helped to ensure the quality and scientific merits ofthe papers. Finally, we would like to thank Responsible Editor Wei Liu and a technical editor of China Agriculture Press. The publication ofthe book could not be possible without the support from all the above individuals and agencies.
