The 30-degree North Latitude is a unique and mysterious zone. Many ofthe world's well-known mysteries occurred in this zone, such as the Bermuda Triangle, the Yarlung Zangbu Grand Canyon, the Hanging Gardens ofAncient Babylon, the ancient Egyptian pyramids, as well as human's earliest and most brilliant bronze civilization. After James Webster's Magic 30 Degrees North Latitude came out, it especially attracted more attention of the world. And Chengdu City is right situated in this latitude, where the mysterious ancient Shu civilization emerged with by the Jinsha Ruins, and there have been many splendid natural and historical wonders here.
For instance, the roots of Chengdu as a center of a civilization can be traced back over 4,500 years. And it is China's one and only city that has kept its location and name unchanged , which is very rare even in the world. Dujiangyan Weirs, close to Chengdu, is the world's oldest irrigation conservancy project, built in the 3rd century B.C. and in use to this day, which has been placed on the list of the world's cultural heritage. During the Northern Song Dynasty(960-1124) Chengdu saw the birth of the world's earliest paper currency, 600 years before the first European paper currency was issued in Sweden.
Chengdu is the home of the world's tea culture. More than 2,000 years ago in the Western Han Dynasty(B.C. 206-A.D.220), tea drinking became part of the local people's daily life here. In the same period, Chengdu remained as the center of the world's lacquerware arts and started exploiting natural gas 1,000 years earlier than Europe. More than 3,000 years ago, local people here constructed a passageway named the Shu Road connected with the Central Plains. So far, it is one ofthe earliest surviving large-scale traflic remains which emerged 1,000 years earlier than the ancient Roman avenue. In addition, there are the most famous Silk Roads. In fact, there were two Silk Roads, the southern and northem ones. Chengdu was the starting point of the Southem Silk Road and by then the northem one was not opened yet. Chengdu silk had been constantly transported to South, Central, and West Asia and to the Mediterranean regions via Burma and India.
